Works Carried Out for Non-Conformist Funeral Chapel, Brixham

Client: Non-Conformist Churchyard Corporate Trustee Ltd.

Surveyor for the project: Croft Surveyors.

Conservation repairs, repointing, kneeler reset and copin replacement.

In this project we carried out a full repoint to the front façade, resetting of the left-hand kneeler, copin replacement including replacement of the lead soakers and slate repairs.

The chapel had suffered from a lack of maintenance over the years. Well established vegetation i.e. Ivy and valerian was present, the valerian had pushed the kneeler out of place by around 50 mm. Cement strap pointing had been carried some time ago leading to some deterioration of the soft clay bricks. The capping consisted of a concrete and local limestone. This was also causing further deterioration to the fabric of the building.

A full repoint was carried out with a matching yellow sand and NHL 3.5, the kneeler was reset to its existing position, new lead soakers and slate repairs were carried out to the roof and the capping was replaced with bath stone copins and pointed with a matching bath

Testimonial

'The Directors of Brixham Non-Conformist Churchyard Corporate Trustee Ltd engaged Celtic Stone Ltd. to carry out repair work to the frontage of the Non-Conformist Chapel in Drew St Brixham. The building had been erected in about 1860 and was in a poor state of repair. Specification for the work had been produced by Nick Burrows of Croft Surveyors in Totnes who also supervised. The work took place over about three weeks from the end of July to the middle of August 2025.

The work was undertaken to a very high standard, within budget and on a challenging site with restricted access. Communications between Celtic Stone and the Trust, once established, were positively maintained throughout. The Trust is very happy to allow images from the work to be used by Celtic Stone to be used in promotional material and would not hesitate to contract Celtic Stone for further work.'
